A bill to redefine digital textbooks using artificial intelligence(AI) as supplementary materials instead of mandatory textbooks has passed the National Assembly’s Legislative and Judiciary Committee.

The main opposition Democratic Party proposed the change to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which the committee approved on Tuesday.

The intention is to initially classify AI textbooks as supplementary materials so they can be gradually integrated into schools after more public discussion.

While textbooks must be adopted by all schools, supplementary materials can be used at the discretion of school principals.

However, the ruling People Power Party opposed the amendment, arguing that the Ministry of Education plans to introduce AI textbooks to schools starting next year and they should be recognized as textbooks to ensure the stable implementation of the policy.

Opposition parties have raised concerns about what they view as the policy’s hasty implementation, citing the need for a bigger budget to create and distribute AI textbooks, as well as risks related to student privacy and potential declines in literacy.
