President Yoon Suk Yeol’s lawyer says the president believes he is innocent of the crime of insurrection and intends to fight the allegations in court.
Seok Dong-hyun, a lawyer for Yoon, also said Tuesday that the president will proudly state his position in court if a public hearing is held at the impeachment trial.
He said Yoon did not incite an insurrection to seize power and that there was no riot.
The lawyer said Yoon will form two separate legal teams, one to look into the treason allegations and one to handle his impeachment trial.
On the prosecution’s request for Yoon to appear for questioning on Saturday, Seok said it is hard to say.
Claiming there must be adjustments, as several investigative agencies are handling the case at the same time, the lawyer said the president will reveal his position on appearing for questioning within a few days, after he reviews the request and makes an assessment.
Earlier on Monday, the prosecution’s special investigation team looking into Yoon’s short-lived martial law move summoned him for the second time to appear for questioning.
A joint investigative team comprising the police, the defense ministry's investigation unit and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials has asked the president to appear for questioning on Wednesday.
