Prosecutors investigating the December 3 martial law incident have decided to transfer the insurrection cases against President Yoon Suk Yeol and former interior minister Lee Sang-min to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials(CIO).
The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office announced on Wednesday that it has agreed with the CIO on the transfer to streamline the investigation, amid concerns that multiple agencies handling the same case could lead to overlap issues.
Prosecutors, police and the CIO began simultaneous investigations amid public pressure to hold Yoon and other officials accountable for the martial law situation.
The legislation that gives the CIO its authority stipulates that the agency can request the transfer of overlapping cases if deemed appropriate, based on the progress of the investigation or concerns about fairness, and prosecutors and police must comply.
There were also concerns about the efficiency of the investigation and potential legal challenges over the legitimacy of the indictment process or evidence in future trials.
