Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul says the government will prepare in advance for the possible resumption of U.S.-North Korea talks before the Donald Trump administration takes power next year.

Cho made the remarks Wednesday at a joint foreign press briefing with the Ministry of Finance at the Press Center in Seoul.

Despite the domestic political turmoil, he said, Seoul will ready response plans and proactively prepare for the possibility that talks could resume under the new U.S. administration.

Cho also noted Trump’s decision to appoint the former U.S. ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, as his special envoy for North Korea, saying it signals that Trump has included North Korea’s nuclear issue among his top priorities.

Seoul’s top envoy also stressed that the government is open to all opportunities for negotiations with North Korea, including talks on the nuclear issue.
