Ruling People Power Party(PPP) floor leader and acting chief Kweon Seong-dong and main opposition Democratic Party(DP) Chair Lee Jae-myung discussed ways to resolve the political deadlock after the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
While paying a courtesy visit to Lee on Wednesday, Kweon suggested refraining from excessive political competition and putting their heads together to resolve the current crisis by addressing economic hardships and national security issues.
Kweon asked the DP to withdraw impeachment motions he said were politically motivated, such as those for Board of Audit and Inspection Chair Choe Jae-hae and justice minister Park Sung-jae, so the Constitutional Court can give priority to Yoon’s impeachment trial.
The PPP’s acting chief then called for discussion of a constitutional amendment to reconceptualize the president’s role, at a time when the nation is witnessing its third presidential impeachment.
Lee suggested reaching bipartisan agreements through concession and compromise, reiterating a proposal that the two sides establish a consultative body as a channel for discussion and to stabilize state affairs.
The DP chief also proposed introducing a supplementary budget to ensure financial stability for average people, saying the government has been overly focused on the potential growth rate and sound fiscal management.
