Acting President Han Duck-soo has asked parliament to reconsider a package of six bills that the opposition unilaterally pushed through, effectively exercising his veto power.

The acting president convened a provisional Cabinet meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday and announced the decision.

Han said he has a heavy heart, having to make the request at a time when cooperation between the government and rival parties is urgently needed.

But he added that the government cannot help but make responsible decisions that prioritize the spirit of the Constitution and the future of the country.

Of the six bills, two would revise the National Assembly Act and four are agricultural bills, one of which would require the government to purchase surplus rice to stabilize prices during market fluctuations.

A similar bill was vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol in 2023 and scrapped in a parliamentary revote.
