Col. Kim Hyun-tae, the commander of the 707th Special Missions Group under the Army Special Warfare Command, said Thursday that his troops were deployed with one-thousand-920 rounds of live ammunition on the night of December 3.

According to legal sources on Thursday, Kim made the statement after the prosecutors questioned him as a witness earlier in the morning.

The commander said he was not informed in advance of the president’s plans to declare martial law and only learned about it from the TV broadcast.

Kim said he received training orders from his superiors around lunchtime on December 3, but it was a routine inspection drill and had nothing to do with martial law.

The commander said his unit was still taking part in the training exercises when martial law was declared.

Then, he said, the unit was told to head to the National Assembly along with the live ammunition that was brought for training purposes.
