The ruling People Power Party(PPP) has agreed to participate in a consultative body to enable the National Assembly and the government to find common ground on state affairs, as suggested by Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, PPP acting chief and floor leader Kweon Seong-dong said talks are underway on the formation of the body, which will focus on national security and economic stability for average people.
He also asked that the acting president pick his defense and interior ministers, as the previous two chiefs resigned immediately after the short-lived martial law decree.
Kweon said the ruling party will also take part in the deployment of a parliamentary delegation overseas, amid a crisis stemming from President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived martial law declaration and impeachment.
At a meeting on the weekend with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who has assumed the role of acting president, Woo suggested forming the consultative body to prevent a vacuum in state affairs.
Speaking to foreign correspondents in Seoul on Thursday, the speaker proposed a bipartisan parliamentary delegation as part of efforts to boost the country’s international credit standing and promote diplomacy.
