The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has urged acting President Han Duck-soo to quickly promulgate special counsel bills against President Yoon Suk Yeol and first lady Kim Keon Hee, warning that it will hold him accountable if he fails to do so by Tuesday.
DP floor leader Park Chan-dae made the call on Sunday in a press conference at the National Assembly, saying that what the acting president should do is to take measures to end the confusion from Yoon's martial law attempt and to make all-out efforts to restore the economy and people's livelihoods in cooperation with the Assembly.
Park's remarks are seen as a warning that the DP will seek Han's impeachment if he delays the promulgation or vetoes the bills mandating special probes into Yoon's botched martial law attempts and allegations against the first lady.
Park also called on the acting president to recommend candidates for another special counsel investigation by Tuesday.
On December 11, the National Assembly passed a motion to invoke the 2014 law on special probes to investigate the martial law case.
The 2014 law enables parliament to launch an investigation without having to introduce new legislation, which means it would not be subject to a presidential veto.
The DP floor leader also urged Han to actively cooperate in the process of appointing three new justices of the Constitutional Court.
