The ruling People Power Party (PPP) floor leader and acting chief Kweon Seong-dong has criticized the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) for pursuing special counsel probes into President Yoon Suk Yeol and first lady Kim Keon-hee with the "ulterior motive of paralyzing state affairs."

The PPP leader made the criticism during a press conference held at the National Assembly on Sunday, claiming that the DP had an "ulterior motive of paralyzing state affairs and the ruling party" with the special counsel probes.

Two bills mandating special probes into Yoon's botched martial law attempts and allegations against the first lady await the approval of acting president Han Duck-soo.

Kweon said that the investigation into Yoon's martial law case by the police, prosecution, the anti-corruption body, and two separate special counsels will incite excessive competition among them.

The acting chief also strongly criticized a special counsel probe into the first lady, claiming that the probe is effectively targeting the government and the ruling party.

Kweon said that PPP lawmakers will decide this week on whether to recommend the acting president veto the bills.
