First vice foreign minister Kim Hong-kyun said the government has explained the domestic situation related to President Yoon Suk Yeol’s botched martial law attempt and his impeachment to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's team.
Kim, who is visiting the United States, made the remarks to reporters on Sunday upon his arrival at Dulles International Airport near Washington D.C.
The vice minister said the government had been communicating with Trump's camp even before the U.S. presidential election and has explained the current domestic situation appropriately.
Kim said the government will continue such communications until the launch of the new Trump administration, although he has no plans to meet with any figures from Trump's side during his trip.
Asked about the Trump team’s perception of the situation in South Korea, Kim said that just as the whole world has witnessed how resilient South Korea's democracy is, they must have a clear understanding of the situation.
Kim is scheduled to meet with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell on Monday before visiting Japan for talks with his Japanese counterpart.
Kim is the first high-ranking foreign ministry official to visit the U.S. since Yoon’s martial law decree.
