The National Assembly's Special Committee on Personnel Hearings began a confirmation hearing for Constitutional Court justice nominees recommended by the main opposition Democratic Party(DP).
The confirmation hearing process for candidates Jeong Gye-seon and Ma Eun-hyeok opened on Monday, with only the committee's DP party members present due to a boycott by the ruling People Power Party(PPP).
DP lawmaker Kim Han-kyu emphasized during the hearing that the PPP agreed last month to take part in the nomination of three justices for the Constitutional Court, and he accused ruling party interim chair Kweon Seong-dong of making baseless claims that Acting President Han Duck-soo cannot appoint justices.
The DP plans to hold a confirmation hearing for Cho Han-chang, the PPP's Constitutional Court justice nominee, on Tuesday without the ruling party's participation, and vote on the appointment motion at a plenary session on Thursday.
The PPP warned that if the DP unilaterally processes the appointment motion, it will file a dispute with the Constitutional Court.
