Representative Kwon Young-se has been named the chief of the ruling People Power Party's(PPP) emergency steering committee.

PPP floor leader and acting chief Kweon Seong-dong announced the selection on Tuesday during a meeting of party lawmakers at the National Assembly. 

This comes ten days after the National Assembly passed a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his imposition of martial law and eight days after former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon's resignation. 

The acting chief said Rep. Kwon, a five-term lawmaker in the capital region, is recognized for his abilities and leadership, and has served in key posts in both the party and the government.

He expressed hope that Kwon will work to stabilize state affairs and pursue unity and changes within the party. 

The PPP plans to officially approve Kwon’s appointment through sessions of the standing national committee and the national committee set for Thursday and Monday, respectively.
