The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) is planning to oust Acting President Han Duck-soo.
The DP plans to report an impeachment motion against Han to a plenary session on Thursday after filing it on Tuesday.
As the law stipulates, a vote must occur between 24 hours and 72 hours after a motion is reported to the plenary session, meaning if the motion is reported on Thursday, voting will take place between Friday and Sunday.
The move comes after the main opposition's demand for the government's promulgation of parliament-passed bills on special counsel probes into the December 3 insurrection and first lady Kim Keon-hee were not met by their Tuesday ultimatum.
DP party floor spokesperson Yoon Jong-kun said the motion was unanimously adopted as an official party position during a general assembly of their representatives.
The main opposition's chief spokesperson Jo Seung-lae said Han's remarks during a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day were, in fact, a declaration that he will neither promulgate the special bills nor appoint Constitutional Court justices without consent from the ruling People Power Party.
Han had urged the rival parties to produce a solution regarding the special probe bills and the appointments of three justices, saying they are issues where legal interpretations and political views can be significantly different.
The DP spokesperson said main opposition lawmakers shared the view that what they see as the acting president's "attempt to suspend the constitutional institution of parliament" cannot be condoned.
