Report: The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) announced on Tuesday its plan to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo.

The DP’s decision came after Han did not greenlight two special counsel bills targeting President Yoon Suk Yeol and first lady Kim Keon-hee during a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day, going against their demands.

The party, which initially announced to propose a motion to impeach Han on Tuesday, said it will wait for Han's appointment of three Constitutional Court justices after Thursday's plenary approval.

DP floor leader Park Chan-dae said the change was made in consideration of public sentiment.

Ruling People Power Party(PPP) acting chief and floor leader Kweon Seong-dong denounced the DP’s actions, saying the opposition's "politics based on intimidation" has reached extreme levels.

Kweon claimed the real reason the DP is seeking Han’s impeachment is to hold a presidential election before a second court ruling is issued for DP leader Lee Jae-myung.

The PPP has argued that the impeachment motion, if submitted, would require support from 200 in the 300-member Assembly as it would for the president, stressing Han is currently the acting president.

The opposition, on the other hand, believes the motion can pass by a majority, or at least 151 votes, enough to impeach the prime minister.
