The ruling People Power Party(PPP) says Han Duck-soo must continue to fulfill his role as acting president even if more than a half of the 300-member National Assembly vote in favor of an impeachment motion against him.
PPP acting chief and floor leader Kweon Seong-dong made the call on Tuesday following the main opposition Democratic Party's(DP) announcement to seek Han's impeachment.
Kweon stressed that in order to oust Han as acting president, voting must meet the requirement applied to a president.
The PPP argues that a two-thirds majority will be needed to pass the motion, if it is submitted.
The opposition, on the other hand, says the motion can pass by a simple majority, or at least 151 votes, enough to impeach the prime minister.
Kweon also slammed DP leader Lee Jae-myung for overturning a promise he made ten days prior not to seek impeachment against Han to prevent disorder in state affairs.
In earlier remarks, Kweon, speaking at a general assembly of PPP lawmakers, said the opposition's "politics based on intimidation" has reached extreme levels.
