The opposition-dominated National Assembly introduced a motion to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo, immediately after he announced that he will defer the appointment of Constitutional Court Justices.
The main opposition Democratic Party(DP) floor leader Park Chan-dae announced the move moments before the start of Thursday’s main plenary session.
Earlier, during an emergency televised address, Han said that he will defer appointing Constitutional Court justices until rival parties reach an agreement on the matter.
Park said Han’s announcement clearly indicates he has no plans to appoint Justices for the Constitutional Court.
The Constitutional Court, which is tasked with deliberating on an impeachment trial for President Yoon Suk Yeol following his Dec. 3 Martial Law decree, needs to fill three seats to have a full nine-member bench.
In making his announcement earlier Han noted that no Constitutional Court justices have previously been appointed without bipartisan agreement.
