The opposition-controlled National Assembly has passed motions to appoint three Constitutional Court justices.

During a plenary session on Thursday, the main opposition Democratic Party(DP) and other minor opposition parties unilaterally passed the motions to appoint Ma Eun-hyuk, Jeong Gye-seon, and Cho Han-chang.

Most of the ruling People Power Party(PPP) boycotted the vote, arguing that Acting President Han Duck-soo lacks the authority to appoint Constitutional Court justices recommended by the Assembly.

The passage came as the opposition parties introduced a motion to impeach Han, following his announcement that he would defer the appointments until rival parties reach an agreement on the matter.
