The National Assembly passed motions giving consent to appointments of three Constitutional Court justice nominees, Ma Eun-hyeok, Jung Gye-seon, and Cho Han-chang.

The motions for the three candidates recommended by parliament was approved on Thursday during a plenary session.

Out of 195 lawmakers who cast a vote for Ma, whose candidacy was endorsed by the opposition, 193 voted in favor, while one abstained and another vote was deemed invalid.

Jung, another opposition-recommended nominee, won support from 193 lawmakers, while one opposed, and another abstained.

Cho, backed by the ruling party, won 185 votes in favor, six against, one abstention and three invalid.

While most of the ruling People Power Party(PPP) lawmakers boycotted the vote claiming that Acting President Han Duck-soo holds no authority to appoint Constitutional Court justices, Reps. Kim Sang-wook, Cho Kyoung-tae, Han Ze-ea, and Kim Yea-ji cast a ballot.

Calling the December 3 martial law declaration anti-democratic violence that set back democracy to its state 40 years ago, Rep. Kim Sang-wook said the vacancies at the Constitutional Court must be swiftly filled before the impeachment trial for President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Rep. Cho said martial law is an act of treason against the people and those who commit such offenses should be held accountable and immediately ousted.
