The ruling People Power Party(PPP) slammed the main opposition Democratic Party's(DP) push to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo, accusing the opposition of destroying the nation's economy and diplomacy.
At a rally in front of the plenary chamber on Thursday, PPP floor leader Kweon Seong-dong said his party will not tolerate the opposition's attempt to proceed with a hasty, retaliatory impeachment aimed to usurp power.
The DP tabled a motion earlier in the day, seeking Han's impeachment immediately after the acting president announced he will defer the appointment of three Constitutional Court justice nominees upon parliamentary consent.
The motion, reported to a plenary session on Thursday afternoon, is expected to be put to a vote within 72 hours.
The PPP floor leader said Han's impeachment, if passed, will throw the economy into disarray, exacerbate instability in the financial market, adversely impact the nation's exports, and ultimately the public livelihood.
Kweon said diplomacy with the U.S. and Japan, which resumed based on trust toward Han, will once again be paralyzed.
The PPP is reportedly considering taking legal steps, including filing for a court injunction or adjudication on jurisdiction disputes by the Constitutional Court, should Han's impeachment motion pass parliament.
