President Yoon Suk Yeol’s defense team says it will argue whether the National Assembly’s impeachment of Yoon was lawful when the trial begins.
Bae Bo-yoon, one of Yoon’s lawyers, revealed the team's intent during the first pretrial conference on Yoon’s impeachment at the Constitutional Court on Friday.
When asked by Constitutional Court Justice Cheong Hyung-sik on whether Yoon plans to challenge the legality of the request for an impeachment trial Bae answered "yes."
Bae said Yoon’s legal team will provide a detailed reply on the matter.
Yoon’s lawyers are likely to dispute the legality of the National Assembly's move to put a motion seeking Yoon’s impeachment to a revote on December 14, seven days after a similar motion was scrapped after attendance fell short of the quorum of two-thirds of the 300-member Assembly.
During the conference, Yun Gap-geun, another one of the president’s lawyers, raised issue with the court deeming that an impeachment trial notice and other documents it sent to Yoon were "delivered,” calling such a move unlawful.
