The opposition-led National Assembly has passed a motion to impeach Acting President Han Duck-soo.

In a plenary session on Friday, all 192 lawmakers in attendance voted for the motion to oust Han. The ruling People Power Party boycotted the vote.

Before ballots were being marked, Speaker Woo Won-shik announced that a simple majority of 151 votes would be sufficient to impeach Han. In response, ruling party lawmakers staged a protest by surrounding the speaker's podium while opposition lawmakers began casting their ballots.

The ruling party argues that a motion to impeach an acting president needs the endorsement of two-thirds of 300-member Assembly, while the opposition says a simple majority is all that is needed as Han was serving in his capacity as prime minister.

PPP lawmakers continued their protest right outside the plenary chamber.

Prime Minister Han had been acting president for nearly two weeks since parliament impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 14 for his failed martial law attempt.

The impeachment motion accused Han, in his role as acting president, of rejecting special counsel probes targeting Yoon's December 3 martial law decree and allegations surrounding First Lady Kim Keon-hee, as well as refusing to appoint Constitutional Court Justices.

The motion also accused Han, as prime minister, of acting as a willing or silent accomplice of insurrection in reference to the December 3 martial law attempt.

It is now up to the Constitutional Court to decide whether to uphold or dismiss Han's impeachment.

In the meantime, deputy prime minister and finance minister Choi Sang-mok has stepped in to fill the void as acting president.
