The ruling People Power Party(PPP) has claimed that the National Assembly’s vote on a motion to impeach Prime Minister Han Duck-soo as acting president is invalid.

PPP floor leader and acting chief Kweon Seong-dong made the claim on Friday during a protest rally held by the party shortly after voting began on the motion to oust Han.

The motion to impeach Han passed in a 192-0 vote during Friday's plenary session.

Kweon argued that a motion to impeach an acting president needs the participation of two-thirds of the 300-member Assembly to meet the quorum, but Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik decided that passage would require a simple majority.

Kweon declared the impeachment vote a failure and urged Han to continue serving as acting president.
