According to the Finance Ministry, Choi held a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at 9:50 a.m. Sunday and issued the order to the acting interior minister, the land minister, and chiefs of fire authorities and police.

The acting president also urged special caution to prevent safety accidents involving firefighters and others during the rescue operations.

Choi then left for the airport in South Jeolla Province.

A Jeju Air passenger jet carrying 175 passengers and six flight attendants drove off the runway and crashed into a wall while landing at the airport at 9:07 a.m. Sunday, killing at least 28 people.
