The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials(CIO), which is looking into the December 3 martial law affair, has requested an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol.

A joint team of investigators from the CIO, the police and the defense ministry said it filed the request with the Seoul Western District Court at 12 a.m. Monday, as Yoon is under suspicion of treason and abuse of power.

Yoon rejected three summons from the CIO to appear for questioning in connection with his botched martial law attempt.

This is the first time that an arrest warrant has been sought for a sitting president.

If the warrant is issued, investigators will be able to question Yoon in custody for up to 48 hours.
