Kim Soo-han, Former National Assembly Speaker, Dead at 96

Former National Assembly Speaker Kim Soo-han died Monday at the age of 96.

According to his obituary, Kim served as a six-term lawmaker, starting with the seventh National Assembly, and also served as speaker from 1996 until 1998, during the first half of the 15th National Assembly.

After his time in parliament, Kim served as president of the Korea-Japan Friendship Association and worked in the private diplomacy sector.

He was also chairman of the Kim Young-sam Center for Democracy, senatorial chair of the Parliamentarian’s Society of the Republic of Korea and chairman of the People Power Party’s Standing Advisory Committee.

A memorial altar for Kim will be set up at the Yonsei Severance Hospital funeral hall in Seoul.
