The transport ministry has confirmed the identities of 146 of the 179 people who died in the Jeju Air plane crash at Muan International Airport.

During a briefing held Monday in Muan County for the families of the victims, the ministry said 146 of the victims had been identified as of Monday afternoon and all 179 bodies recovered from the accident site had been moved to a temporary morgue.

An official said families of the victims will be contacted once identification and medical examinations by investigative agencies, such as the prosecution and police, are completed.

An official from the Jeonnam Provincial Police told reporters at a separate briefing held at the Muan International Airport on Monday that they requested the National Forensic Service to help in the DNA identification for the remaining victims, and that they expect the results on Tuesday.

At Muan International Airport, clean up and recovery work continued for a second day while investigators looked into the cause of the Jeju Air plane crash.

Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, which departed from Bangkok, Thailand, and was heading to Muan Airport, was trying to land in Muan at 9:03 a.m. Sunday, apparently without landing gear, and skidded off the runway before slamming into an airport barrier wall and bursting into flames.

The accident killed 179 people, including all 175 passengers, two pilots, and two crew members. Only two cabin crew members who were seated in the back of the plane survived the crash.
