The new interim leader of the ruling People Power Party, Kwon Young-se, has apologized to the South Korean people for the short-lived martial law situation earlier this month.

In a written inaugural speech Monday, Kwon issued a formal apology for causing public anxiety and concern after the December 3 martial law decree and subsequent impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The interim chief also expressed his condolences over the lives lost in Sunday’s Jeju Air plane crash, pledging the ruling party’s cooperation with the government to support the victims’ families.

Kwon called on everyone to join forces to immediately stabilize state affairs so the political turmoil does not cause an economic or security crisis.

He promised to continue pushing for change and innovation, as well as to engage in self-reflection and get closer to the people.

The ruling party leader urged the main opposition Democratic Party to call off its plans to impeach more Cabinet ministers, proposing talks through a three-way consultative body that also involves the government.
