Ruling People Power Party floor leader Kweon Seong-dong says it was “inappropriate” for a court to issue an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The floor leader told reporters on Tuesday that attempting to arrest a sitting president through the emergency measure of an arrest warrant is not an appropriate investigative method.
Kweon added that an arrest warrant is issued when there is a high risk of a suspect destroying evidence or fleeing, but there is no such risk in President Yoon’s case and the investigative authorities should have been more cautious.
Asked if Yoon should comply with the warrant, Kweon said he thinks Yoon will respond properly, adding that it’s not the party’s place to interfere in matters related to Yoon’s trial and the ongoing investigation.
The Seoul Western District Court issued the warrant on Tuesday for Yoon, who is under investigation on suspicion of treason and abuse of power in connection with his failed martial law bid earlier this month.
