Two high-ranking military officials accused of deploying troops to parliament and the election watchdog on December 3, as well as plotting and executing a plan to arrest politicians, will stand trial.
A special prosecution team dedicated to the martial law probe indicted Capital Defense Commander Lee Jin-woo and Defense Counterintelligence Commander Yeo In-hyung under detention Tuesday, on charges of playing a major role in an insurrection, abusing their power, and obstructing others from exercising their rights.
Previously, former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun was indicted in connection with the martial law crisis.
When the country was under martial law, the former minister allegedly ordered Yeo to arrest and detain some ten politicians, including main opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung and then-ruling People Power Party chief Han Dong-hoon.
Yeo is alleged to have asked Police Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho to dispatch some 100 officers to track the politicians’ locations and ordered the defense ministry to send 100 investigators to reinforce their efforts.
Yeo is also accused of deploying 115 troops to the National Election Commission to obtain electronic data from the watchdog.
Lee Jin-woo is accused of commanding the deployment of troops to the National Assembly in an attempt to block lawmakers from passing a motion requiring the president to rescind martial law.
After allegedly receiving an order from the president to forcibly remove the lawmakers from the plenary chamber, Lee Jin-woo is suspected of commanding the troops to do so.
