Acting President Choi Sang-mok has appointed two justices to the Constitutional Court, while deferring a decision on a third nominee pending a bipartisan agreement.

Presiding over a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Choi appointed Cho Han-chang, who was recommended by the ruling People Power Party, and Jung Gye-seon, one of two candidates put forth by the main opposition Democratic Party.

The third nominee, Ma Eun-hyeok, was also recommended by the main opposition party.

The acting president said he was appointing the two justices to prevent a crisis in the domestic economy and to protect the public good, amid political uncertainties and social discord since the December 3 martial law incident and subsequent presidential impeachment.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who had initially stepped in as acting president, was  impeached by the opposition-strong parliament after he deferred the justices’ appointments and called for a bipartisan agreement.
