A Seoul court has issued a detention warrant for former first lady Kim Keon-hee over a string of corruption allegations.

The Seoul Central District Court granted the warrant around 12 a.m. Wednesday, citing concerns she might destroy evidence.

The court deliberated the warrant request in a hearing that ran from 10:10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Special counsel Min Joong-ki’s team requested the warrant on Thursday last week, saying Kim violated the Capital Markets Act and other laws.

Min’s team made the request after questioning Kim over allegations that she played a role in a stock price manipulation scheme, meddled in election nominations, and accepted bribes in exchange for business favors.

Kim was taken to the Seoul Southern Detention Center after the hearing and will undergo formal admission procedures.

It’s the first time in the country’s history that both a former president and his spouse have been taken into custody.
