President Lee Jae Myung will visit Japan from August 23 to 24 for his first summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, before heading to the United States for talks with President Donald Trump on August 25.

Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said Wednesday that the Tokyo meeting will include a summit and dinner, with discussions on strengthening South Korea-Japan cooperation and trilateral cooperation with the U.S., as well as global issues and regional peace and stability.

Kang recalled the leaders’ agreement in June to promptly resume summit diplomacy, with the venue alternating between the two countries.

She said the aim of the upcoming visit is to deepen their personal rapport and trust.

With both the Japan and U.S. trips now confirmed, the presidential office has dropped plans to send special envoys to either country.
