A firefighter who had been battling depression since responding to the 2022 Itaewon crowd crush has been found dead, ten days after going missing.

Police said Wednesday that the 30-year-old was discovered under a highway bridge in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, about eight kilometers from where he abandoned his car and phone on August 10.

His body was in an advanced state of decomposition, though investigators found no signs of foul play.

Authorities believe he walked to the site after leaving his vehicle and are reviewing his movements while considering an autopsy.

The firefighter had been undergoing treatment for depression since the tragedy and left behind notes apologizing to family and friends before his disappearance.

The deadly crowd crush on October 29, 2022, in Itaewon, Seoul, claimed 159 lives and left hundreds injured.
