National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik has received an official invitation to attend China’s Victory Day celebrations in Beijing next month, his office said Wednesday.

The Sept. 3 event will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, with a large military parade planned in Tiananmen Square.

Beijing initially sought President Lee Jae Myung’s attendance, but Woo is expected to represent Seoul in his stead as the country’s No. 2 protocol official.

Woo met Chinese Ambassador Dai Bing in Seoul earlier in the day, when he formally received the invitation.

The National Assembly said it will disclose his final decision on participation once it is confirmed.

Lawmakers from the Korea-China Parliamentary Friendship Association, which include members from both ruling and opposition parties, may accompany Woo on the trip.
