The head of the Korea Railroad Corporation(KORAIL) has announced his resignation amid backlash over the deaths of two workers and injuries suffered by five others after they were hit by an incoming train in Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province, during a safety inspection.

The transport ministry said Thursday that KORAIL President and CEO Han Moon-hee tendered his resignation Wednesday and related procedures are underway.

Han’s three-year term was set to run through July 2026.

The accident took place on the Gyeongbu Line around 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, when a Jinju-bound Mugunghwa train traveling from Dongdaegu Station struck the workers.
