Red Cross Proposes Efforts to Reunite Separated Families

The head of South Korea’s Red Cross has proposed to North Korea’s Red Cross that the two organizations launch active efforts to confirm the whereabouts of Koreans who want to meet with their long-lost kin on opposite sides of the border.

Yoo Jong-ha made the proposal to his North Korean counterpart, Choi Song-ik, at the North’s Mount Geumgang resort during the first of two sessions of inter-Korean family reunions.

Yoo said he made the proposal with an aim of using the cold-weather months to arrange more family reunions.
Yoo said he has yet to get a response from the North on the proposal.

Yoo added that North Korean officials claimed that the North’s Wonsan area suffered just as mightily from devastating floods as the Sinuiju area. Yoo said he told the officials that he would work to help the flood victims once the claims are confirmed.

Yoo has held two rounds of unofficial talks with Choi since family reunions began at the mountain resort on Saturday.
