Former People Power Party(PPP) floor leader Na Kyung-won has announced that she will run for Seoul mayor.

Declaring her bid at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday, Na stressed the need to break away from injustice and recover fairness and justice through the opposition camp’s victory in the mayoral race.

This marks her second bid after running against late Mayor Park Won-soon in 2011.

In an apparent reference to People’s Party Chairman Ahn Cheol-soo, Na said the upcoming race cannot be entrusted to a person who gives up easily and is calculative. She said that person helped the incumbent government at critical political moments and thus is not suited to represent the opposition in the mayoral race.

Na’s announcement has drawn attention to whether the opposition will opt to ultimately field a unified candidate.

According to a survey conducted late last month, Ahn is likely to beat Minister of SMEs and Startups Park Young-sun from the ruling Democratic Party(DP) in the election if he becomes a unified candidate for the opposition bloc.

The competition, however, is expected to tilt in Park’s favor if there is no candidate merger between the PPP and the People’s Party. The survey also found that if Na is chosen to represent the whole opposition bloc, the former minister would still lead.

Meanwhile, former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who is a PPP member as well, has called on Ahn to join the main opposition party, saying if he does not respond to his call by Sunday, Oh will run for mayor.
