The presidential office has slammed comments made by the interim head of the main opposition party for accusing the Moon Jae-in administration of engaging in "enemy acts", claiming it had a "top secret" plan to build nuclear power stations in North Korea.
In a briefing on Friday, presidential spokesperson Kang Min-seok called People Power Party interim chief Kim Chong-in's statements irresponsible, likening them to collusion between South Korea's past conservative governments and North Korea to influence South Korean elections.
He called Kim's comments preposterous and deluded.
Kang also said the government would pursue a legal response, though he did not specify what.
On Thursday, South Korean media had reported that documents allegedly deleted by Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy officials prior to an official audit into the shutdown of an aging South Korean reactor included materials on government plans to construct a nuclear power plant in North Korea.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has denied such a plan was ever officially considered.
