The Unification Ministry appears doubtful whether North Korea can fulfill its objective to boost its economy.

Briefing lawmakers at the National Assembly on Thursday, the Unification Ministry said North Korea recently stressed pursuing accomplishments in rebuilding its economy and improving the livelihoods of its people despite the current hardships coupled with emergency quarantine efforts.

But the ministry said it is unclear how much progress could be made given deteriorating overseas trade conditions.

Regarding North Korea's stance towards South Korea and the United States, the Unification Ministry said Pyongyang hasn't revealed a concrete policy direction, maintaining its strategic position to respond to South Korean and U.S. policy toward the North.
