The Environment Ministry will designate the area around Wangpicheon River in North Gyeongsang Province as an eco-friendly preservation zone.

Located across Uljin and Youngyang counties, the area is the country's largest official environmental district, spanning 99 million square meters.

The preserve is 1.6 times bigger than that of the Dong River in Gangwon Province and boasts superb natural scenery and vegetation.

The Wangpicheon area is also home to endangered and rare species such as otters, antelopes, hawks and wildcats for whom Green Korea in 2002 urged state protection.
