80s Nostalgia

2022-09-09

Jonny

Hello, since you say nothing is too trivial, I have some thoughts to share after a few segments and comments on recent shows got my brain focused on the idea of nostalgia and one thing I keep thinking is I am actually pretty grateful to have grown up when I did.

Maybe I am having that effect of looking back with rosy lenses, but as an 80s kid it seemed like the world was rapidly moving forward. Devices we had seemed unprecedented and futuristic. Movies, TV, and music from those years are still uniquely iconic today. I think 80s nostalgia is so strong because we all knew the same high quality media because it was low quantity. There was no information overload and we got bored at home. We really did ride our bikes all across suburbia listening to mix tapes and had a ton of freedom because our parents couldn’t track us down easily.

Then as a young adult in the 90s I remember all of the numerous emerging indie musicians and finding the ones I really connected with and using new electronic mail with other fans. DIY burned CDs from garage bands and home printed magazines were common. It seemed like a time for deep angsty reflection and joining together on a growing internet to fight against negative social constructs! Right? Well, it seems like the power of “Meh” took the wind out of the sails and then the corporate radio shifted back to high rotation of the top songs.

But those decades felt like they had a distinct character and flavor that I appreciate having experienced. How about anyone else?
