Moon Jae-in Becomes President with 41.1% Votes

Moon Jae-in of the Democratic Party has been confirmed as South Korea's new president. 
 
The National Election Commission(NEC) said that it completed counting votes for the presidential election at 7 a.m. on Wednesday. A total of 32-million-672-thousand-101 people cast a ballot and 41-point-08 percent of those chose Moon to be the country’s next president.
 
Hong Joon-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party(LPK) finished second with 24-point-03 percent of the vote, while Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party came in third with 21-point-41 percent.
 
Yoo Seong-min of the splinter Bareun Party secured six-point-76 percent of the vote to rank fourth, ahead of Sim Sang-jeung of the progressive Justice Party, who earned six-point-17 percent.
 
Among the minor candidates, Cho Won-jin of the Saenuri Party received zero-point-31 percent, followed by independent Kim Min-chan at zero-point-one percent.
 
A total of 135-thousand-733 votes were deemed invalid while nine-million-671-thousand-802 people abstained from voting.
 
Moon had the strongest support came from the Democratic Party’s home turf, the Jeolla Provinces, with 64-point-84 percent of the votes from North Jeolla going to him. He also garnered 61-point-14 percent and 59-point-87 percent of the votes from Gwangju and the South Jeolla Province, respectively.
 
In Seoul, 42-point-34 percent of the voters chose Moon.
 
Meanwhile, the NEC will hold a general meeting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday to approve the vote counting. The election watchdog’s approval will immediately begin Moon’s presidential term.
