S. Korea Aims to Become a Nation Strong in Sport with the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games

South Korea has made all-out efforts to emerge as a nation strong in winter sports as the host of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games.

Under the slogan, “Passion. Connected.” the games will begin on February ninth for a 17-day run. Competitions will be held throughout Pyeongchang, Gangneung and Jeongseon, all in Gangwon Province. The upcoming games are the third to be held in Asia and the first to be hosted by South Korea.

All preparations for the games have concluded, including construction of the PyeongChang Olympic Plaza, where the opening and closing ceremonies will take place, and of all 12 venues where athletes will compete.

A KTX bullet-train railway linking Seoul and Gangneung also launched operations on December 22nd.

Despite security concerns amid North Korea’s provocations, more than 90 countries have already expressed their intentions to take part in the Games.

South Korea is aiming to rank fourth in the overall medal tally by securing up to eight gold medals. Its best score so far was posted in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics when it came in fifth.

South Korea is seeking to grab gold medals in short track events, with particular attention on female skater Choi Min-jeong who will be competing in the Olympics for the first time. Choi won a total of eight gold medals in the 2017–18 International Skating Union World Cup.

Attention is also being drawn to the upcoming performance of female speed skating champion Lee Sang-hwa and male speed skater Lee Seung-hoon.
South Korea is also aiming to win medals for the first time in the skeleton and snowboard events.
The last time South Korea hosted an Olympic event was in 1988 when it organized the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
