Singer BoA to Use Dramas to Gain Foothold in China
South Korean pop star BoA is hoping to emulate her popularity at home and in Japan by making a name for herself in Chinese dramas, her management agency said Monday.
“BoA will approach the Chinese market through dramas, which are a more convenient and speedy way of gaining recognition in such a broad market,” said Lee Soo-man, a producer at SM Entertainment.
“She won't work as a (television) talent full-time, but just do it as a second job,” he said, adding that the agency is already contacting a drama production company on her behalf.
BoA's new album, “Best of Soul,” became the first album of the year in Japan to reach sales of 1 million copies. The teen sensation, a figurehead for the “Korean Wave” in Asia, previously broke new ground by releasing No. 1 hit singles simultaneously in Korea and Japan, recorded in both languages.
She will perform at a Korean cultural festival in Los Angeles on Saturday, and is preparing to release her fifth album.
