Arson in Daegu subway train leaves 44 dead, 140 injured

Police said a fire broke out on a subway train in Daegu Tuesday morning, leaving 35 passengers killed and some 139 others injured. Police said the fire, which is believed to be the result of arson, started around 9:55 a.m. on a train on Deagu's Subway Line No. 1 between Jincheon and Ansim stations. Eyewitness Jun Yoong-nam, 64, said that a middle-aged man wearing a tracksuit set fire to a plastic milk bottle, believed to contain flammable material, and threw it into the subway car. Victims were taken to three nearby hospitals, including Kyungpook National University Hospital.
