500 Relics Found in Waters off Jin Island

About 500 relics have been found on the bottom of the sea off Jin Island, South Jeolla Province.

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage released on Thursday the results of its underwater survey conducted in the area last year.

Researchers excavated two “Yogos,” a pottery instrument that was the basis for the Korean traditional percussion instrument “Janggu.” This is the first discovery of a Yogo.

They also found valuable relics such as pottery from the first century during the time of the early Three Kingdoms.

The institute said marine trade has been active since the Three Kingdoms in the region of Uldolmok where the relics were found.

Uldolmok is also a famous historical place where Admiral Yi Sun-shin and his naval forces defeated enemy warships during a Japanese invasion in 1592.
