North Korea appears to have suspended spreading anti-South Korean leaflets as it promised earlier this month.
South Korean officials said Tuesday that the government detected the North stopped leaflet activities along the western front two weeks ago.
They said fliers denouncing the South have not been spotted since January fourth on the five northwestern border islands in the Yellow Sea, including Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong Islands.
The South is now analyzing possible reasons behind the halt. The South Korean military and intelligence authorities are focusing on whether such a move is related to the North's National Defense Commission pledging to halt all slander against the South.
A military official said the North could have temporarily stopped scattering the fliers due to weather or another purpose. The official added nothing can be confirmed, and the South is closely watching the North’s moves.
But the official said the North’s military is carrying out its winter training more actively than previous years with the main focus on ground troops.
