Data Shows S. Koreans Eating Less Rice

South Koreans' rice consumption hit a record low last year.

Statistics Korea said on Tuesday that the average South Korean ate 67-point-two kilograms of rice last year, down from 69-point-eight kilograms from 2012.

This marked the lowest level since consumption was 105-point-five kilograms in 1963 when related-records were first kept.

The Health and Welfare Ministry’s 2012 statistics on public health show rice has been the number one source of calories for South Koreans since 1998.

But the portion of white rice among calorie sources for South Koreans has been falling since 1998. The figure dropped from 42 percent that year to 38 percent in 2005 and 31-point-six percent in 2012.

The ministry’s statistics show pork and instant noodles were the second and third largest source of calories, respectively.
