KBS has commissioned a survey agency to analyze what's called big data to find out what Korean netizens are talking about on social media regarding the Lunar New Year holiday.
Asked by KBS, Daumsoft has analyzed some 560 million blog entries on the Internet over the past six years related to the New Year or the Lunar New Year holiday called "seol" in Korean.
As for the use of emotive words related to seol, people mostly used positive words such as "merry" and "happy" but negative words such as "stress," "worry" and "concerns" were also found.
Regarding gifts exchanged on lunar day, gift certificates and cash were the most talked about in 2010. But this year, words such as soap and sugar are newly spotted, as affordable and practical gifts are more popular amid the recession.
As for New Year resolutions and wishes, the words "hope" and "economy" were most frequently used in 2008 while in recent days, "going on a diet" is more mentioned than "health."
The stress and worry related to preparing for the holiday meal is also found to begin from about a week prior and continue for ten days after the holiday. Such food-related concerns including the preparation, dealing with leftovers and overeating generally persist for about two weeks.
